It’s not a novel, but rather artistic portraits of real-life figures, through which Naguib Mahfouz reflects a historical account of the political and social events unfolding in Egypt.
We encountered events we had never imagined. Ismail Sidqi abolished the 1923 constitution, and the Wafd Party rose up to fight it with all its popular might. It was a terrifying day, when tensions reached fever pitch. Police and army forces occupied intersections. Unable to assemble for a massive demonstration, people of all classes froze in alleyways, side streets, and alleys, from where they rushed out into the open, shouting, throwing bricks in all directions. They quickly dispersed, only to start again, pursued by bullets. Taha Adnan, Reda Hamada, and I participated in the demonstrations that day. From the beginning of the day, we participated in the scattered gatherings, the sudden attacks, and the rapid dispersals, to the sound of flying bullets. We watched hundreds fall, as soldiers swooped down like vultures, carrying them with inhuman violence, throwing them into lorries, and covering their blood with sand and dirt.
