I have no doubt that every Egyptian here understands the magnitude of the catastrophe looming over our homeland. This catastrophe is not limited to the actual Israeli military threat to our eastern borders, nor to American dictates and the apparent incompetence of our government’s foreign policy. Rather, it extends to every aspect of our lives. We no longer have theater, cinema, scientific research, or education. We have only festivals, conferences, and a box of lies. We no longer have industry, agriculture, health care, or justice. Corruption and plunder are rampant, and anyone who objects is subjected to humiliation, beatings, and torture. In light of this reality, the writer cannot close his eyes or remain silent. He cannot abdicate his responsibility.
