Dictionary of Countries (7 parts with indexes) by Yaqut al-Hamawi… Yaqut al-Hamawi compiled the names of countries and locations, including mountains and valleys, in alphabetical order. He specified the location of each country appropriately, such as its distance from a more famous one. He discussed the derivation of the word, then mentioned the famous figures among them and those related to them, introducing the scholars of hadith, then the poets and men of letters, and others, giving biographies of some of them, and mentioning some of the poems. Yaqut faithfully drew on previous books, citing their references, and also relied on his own information and travels. The reader will also notice some political and social features, and he mentioned 12,952 entries (countries). Two volumes of scientific indexes were attached to the book. The book, with its five parts, represents a dictionary that includes the names of countries, mountains, valleys, valleys, villages, settlements, seas, and rivers. The author divided it into five chapters: Chapter One: Describes the form of the Earth and recounts what the ancients said about its appearance and what the later ones narrated about its form. Chapter Two describes the differences in terminology regarding the meaning of “region,” its derivation, and indications of the direction of prayer in each region. Chapter Three discusses terms such as “barid,” “farsakh,” “mile,” “koura,” and others. Chapter Four explains the rule of lands and countries conquered in Islam, and the rule of dividing spoils and land tax on those conquered by peace or by force. Chapter Three discusses a number of countries whose mention is not specific to one location. This is in terms of the arrangement of the topics. As for the purposes addressed by the author, he divided each topic into twenty-eight books, arranged alphabetically. Consequently, each book is divided into twenty-eight chapters, arranged alphabetically, adhering to the order of each word in alphabetical order, to present what should be presented according to alphabetical order. The purpose of this arrangement is to facilitate access to the desired destination without difficulty.
