Description
The book “The Diaries” by Mohamed Hassanein Heikal, published on the fourth anniversary of his death, was released by the Culture Department of the newspaper “Akhbar Al-Youm.”
The substantial book, comprising 623 pages, is divided into three parts, each dedicated to the diaries of one consecutive year (1955, 1956, and 1957). These were the last three years Heikal spent at “Akhbar Al-Youm,” serving as editor-in-chief of the magazine “Akher Sa’a” and the newspaper “Al-Akhbar,” before moving on to become editor-in-chief of Al-Ahram newspaper until 1974.
These articles are distinguished by their diverse topics, ranging from literature and art to a touch of politics. They present the reader with another facet of Heikal, one beyond politics: the intellectual, knowledgeable about the secrets of the arts, and possessing the tools of an artist, tools he never abandoned, even when writing on the most complex political subjects.
