Description

The book “Prophecies of the Hungry” by Ayman Al-Atoum is a collection of poems written by the author while imprisoned. As the cover states, “Poems Written in Prison.” In his introduction, the author affirms that prison stimulated his poetic spirit and touched his heart, transforming it into a yearning for home. He explains that the greater the physical deprivation, the greater the spiritual outpouring. He believes that prison bars led him to a necessary ferment and a refined intellectual maturity. From Al-Atoum’s perspective, the pinnacle of realism is that prison, in some cases, may be his natural place. He argues that freedom of the spirit is not granted by boundless spaces, nor can it be contained within the walls of solitary confinement.
