Description
A fundamental characteristic of all meditation techniques, including Eastern martial arts—and even all forms of exercise—is a state of alertness and presence in the present. This is what Osho calls mindfulness. When we can recognize and understand this state of mindfulness, we gain a powerful tool for self-control in all aspects of our lives. According to great sages like Lao Tzu, most of us go through life much like walking in the dark. We are not present in what we do, we are not aware of our surroundings, and we are not conscious of the motivations behind our words and actions. At the same time, we have all experienced periods of heightened awareness and alertness in unusual circumstances: a sudden, unexpected accident on the road, where time seems to stand still, or emotionally charged situations that deeply affect us: celebrating the birth of a child for the first time, or being with someone at the moment of their death. In these situations, we become aware of every movement, sound, and thought. Osho says that mindfulness is the path that allows us to be centered, masters of ourselves, and free in every aspect of life. In this book, Osho teaches us how to live more consciously, thoughtfully, and contemplatively, and to fill our lives with love, compassion, and awareness.
