Description
“The monk of thought raised his head and looked at the coffin before him, then lowered it again, continuing his reflections, whispering: ‘Oh God! How strong is that sacred bond for a man! It is truly the bond between a man and his child… and the source of its sanctity is the blood that must flow between them pure; for if it becomes tainted or defiled, or is tainted by deceit, or mixed with fraud, or is touched by the specter of doubt and suspicion, then a man can scarcely bear it.’”
Indeed, if doubt assails a husband’s heart regarding his wife, the mightiest of truths will not prevail against the fortresses of illusions he will erect within himself! A tragic tale reminiscent of Shakespeare’s masterpiece; In “Othello,” Tawfiq al-Hakim tells the story of a “monk of thought” whose solitude is interrupted by a beautiful woman who expresses her desire to pursue literature and master the art of artistic imagination. She begins corresponding with him and visiting him until she captures his heart. However, as soon as he takes refuge in his reason and restrains his desires, he finds himself embroiled in a complex problem between this woman and her husband, who begins to suspect her behavior after reading her first writings! What did she write in those papers? What did the storm of doubt wreak on the husband’s mind? And what can the monk of thought do in the face of all this?
