It is time for us to bring Omar ibn al-Khattab out of the realm of biography on library shelves and into our daily lives. It is time for us to bring Omar ibn al-Khattab’s understanding of the Quran and the Sunnah from the pages of history books into practical application. Omar’s understanding of the Quran and Sunnah, at a very critical juncture in Islamic history, is what extended this history horizontally and vertically: horizontally in the conquests of lands, and vertically in the horizons of justice, construction, and advancement. We cannot claim that this understanding of Omar is the only correct understanding of the Quran and Sunnah, but we do claim that this understanding, which contributed to the making of Islamic civilization, is precisely what we need today, among all the understandings that may have been suitable in other historical periods. Today, in this predicament we have reached, as we strive to escape it, we need Omar’s understanding, his vision, his perspective, to move from our current situation towards a thriving future, towards fulfilling the purpose for which we were created.
