My expectations were high, but the reality was harsher than I imagined.
The novel begins with the visit of “Pip”, the protagonist, to his parents’ grave and meets an escaped prisoner who asks him to bring him some food and an iron cooler the next day; “Pip” actually brings what is requested of him and resorts to stealing food from the house of his sister, with whom he lived and her husband “John”. “Pip” gets an invitation from Miss “Havisham” to play in her house, who was known for her strange behavior. She was wearing wedding clothes despite being an old woman and there was a clear reason for this, which was that she was betrayed by a person who promised her marriage and then left her, so she became sad and kept all the wedding ceremonies from the clothes to the clock that stopped at the hour when he announced his departure after seizing her money. He meets “Estella”, who was the same young age as him, but she was arrogant and haughty. It later turns out that “Estella” was adopted by Mrs. “Havisham” to entertain her in her solitude.
