Muhibb al-Din al-Tabari (615 AH – 694 AH = 1218 AD – 1295 AD) was a memorizer and jurist from the Shafi’i school of jurisprudence. He was born and died in Mecca. He was considered the sheikh of hadith scholars and Shafi’is in the Hijaz during his time. He heard from the sheikhs of hadith and language in Mecca, as well as from others who came to the city. He narrated hadiths and compiled hadiths with high chains of transmission. He held a high position with al-Muzaffar Yusuf ibn Umar ibn Rasul, and taught at al-Muzaffar’s father’s school, known as al-Mansuriyya. He traveled to Yemen, where al-Muzaffar heard some of his works. A number of prominent figures praised Imam Muhibb al-Din and wrote great biographies of him, to the point that it was said that Mecca had not produced anyone like al-Muzaffar al-Tabari after al-Shafi’i.
