Ahmed Matar is an Iraqi poet born in 1954 in the village of Tanuma, one of the districts of Shatt al-Arab district in Basra. He is the fourth son among ten brothers and sisters, and lived there during his childhood before his family moved while he was still a teenager to live in a house across the river in the Al-Asma’i neighborhood.
