Jalal al-Din Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakr ibn Muhammad ibn Sabiq al-Din Bakr ibn Uthman ibn Muhammad ibn Khadr ibn Ayoub ibn Muhammad ibn Sheikh Hammam al-Din al-Khudayri al-Suyuti, known as Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti, was born after sunset on Sunday night, the beginning of Rajab (Cairo 849 AH/1445 AD – Cairo 911 AH/1505 AD). He is an imam, memorizer, interpreter, historian, writer, and Shafi’i jurist. He has about 600 works. He grew up in Cairo as an orphan; his father died when he was five years old. When he reached forty years of age, he isolated himself from people and secluded himself in Rawdat al-Miqyas, on the Nile, isolated from all his friends, as if he did not know any of them, so he wrote most of his books. The rich and princes would visit him and offer him money and gifts, which he would refuse. The Sultan asked for him repeatedly, but he did not come to him. He sent him gifts, but he refused them. He remained like that until he died. He was called “Ibn al-Kutub” because his father asked his mother to bring him a book, but she went into labor and gave birth to him while she was among the books.
