A Scottish novelist, historian, and Unionist politician, he was the fifteenth Governor-General of Canada since Confederation. After a brief legal career, Buchan pursued a career in writing and politics and diplomacy, serving as private secretary to the governors of various colonies in Africa. He was elected to the Scottish Universities Parliament in 1927, but spent most of his time writing, most notably The Thirty-Nine Steps and other adventure stories.
