Sahar Adnan Khalifeh (born in Nablus in 1941) is a Palestinian writer and novelist. She married at an early age in an arranged marriage and separated from her husband after 13 years. She completed her university studies, earning a doctorate from the University of Iowa in women’s studies and American literature. Her writing style is characterized by transparency, depth, and simplicity. She has worked in the field of women’s rights for more than 30 years. She has written 11 novels to date. Her first novel, “We Are No Longer Your Handmaids” (1974), generated a resonance due to its advocacy of women’s freedom, but Sahar did not gain literary recognition until the publication of her second novel, “The Cactus” (1976). Most of her novels have been translated into Hebrew, French, German, Dutch, English, Italian, Spanish, Malay, Greek, Norwegian, and Russian.
