It is a novel that tells the story of the struggle of blacks in America with racism and the harsh conditions they face, through the life of the character Tom the slave.

Is it true what they say about Diskey? Is it true that the sun always shines? Do the sweet magnolia bushes bloom at every door, and that everyone keeps eating possums until they are full? Is it true what they say about Swanney? And do dreams soar by that brook? Do they laugh, do they love, as they say in every song? If that’s true, then that’s my home. Bing Boy leaves home. There on the riverbank… Every step he takes forces the old house to the sidewalk, and the ground beneath its foundation is soaked with water. How long can those wooden supports stand? But it was the ladder that really worried me. It was liable to fall at any moment, and then they were caught. A long black song, Sleep, child, your father has gone to town. Sleep, child, the sun is setting. Sleep, child, your candy is in the bag. Sleep, child, your father is on his way home… She sang this tune in a low tone over and over again. She rocked the wooden cradle with her bare black foot with every pause of her voice. The child screamed so loudly that her sobs drowned out the song.

In this book, the writer depicts the discordant relations between whites and blacks, the abhorrent oppression that the American citizen inflicts on the black person, the contempt, injustice and exploitation far from the principles of truth, justice and equality, all of which they use as a pretext to deprive the black man of his rights, seize his money and humiliate him.
