I looked at my notes and didn’t like them. I was at Automation for three days, I think. And I didn’t learn anything. I only know the facts. Here are the facts:
Susan Calvin was born in 1982. That makes her 75 now. Everyone knows Automation is 75 now. Lawrence Robertson started the company the year Dr. Calvin was born. It became one of the largest and strangest companies in human history. Well, everyone knows that too.
At the age of 20, Susan Calvin was a student of Dr. Alfred Lanning at Automation. Lanning built the first robot that walked and had a human voice. It was a slow robot that smelled of oil—but it could talk.
Susan was a quiet girl. She wasn’t pretty, but she was smart. She watched, listened, learned, and felt the beginnings of a cold love.
She left UCLA in 2003 and began working on robot brains. Lawrence Robertson discovered the positronic brain. This was a major discovery in robotics. A positronic brain is almost as large as a human brain.
