Description

The Gospel According to Jesus Christ (Portuguese: O Evangelho segundo Jesus Cristo) is a historical novel by Nobel laureate José Saramago.

Because of this novel, Saramago was ostracized by the Church in 1991. It sparked widespread controversy due to its unconventional portrayal of Jesus, depicting him as a man who has a relationship with Mary Magdalene and seeks to avoid his crucifixion. The novel was met with fierce criticism from religious circles and generated political and cultural debate in Portugal. In 1992, this controversy led to Saramago’s nomination being withdrawn from the shortlist for the European Literature Prize by the Portuguese authorities, an action the author considered a form of political and cultural censorship.
