Description
It is known that the Arabian Gulf once extended northward into Iraq, far beyond the current mouth of the Shatt al-Arab waterway. Its waters covered a large part of southern Iraq. However, the silt carried by the Euphrates and Tigris rivers gradually submerged a portion of the Gulf, with the two rivers covering an estimated 1.5 square miles per century. The inhabitants of the Gulf, along with other ancient neighboring peoples with whom they had relations, such as the Sumerians, Akkadians, Babylonians, and Assyrians, referred to it as the “Lower Sea” or “Nearer Sea,” in contrast to the “Upper Sea,” which is the Mediterranean Sea today. The name “Gulf” does not appear in ancient Persian writings, so we do not know what it was called by them.
