The book “Truth and Writing” revolves around descriptive writing in short stories and novels and examines four themes: “Strategies,” “Tools,” “Themes,” and “The Story.” The book is part of the “Writing about Writing” series by Kuwaiti author Buthaina Al-Essa, published by Arab Scientific Publishers and Tكوين Publications (2018).
In the introduction to her book, Al-Essa asserts that truth is the compass of writing. It is the place we head to, line by line. Because truth is the essence and purpose of artistic work, description and descriptive writing have this central importance in the novel. It is not merely a tool through which we attempt to activate our ability to weave different worlds, but rather a tool that monitors the meaning intended by the writer. It is not a solid mass, but rather a mist or dust, something that fades away in the entire work, line by line. Discussing descriptive writing cannot occur in isolation from narrative truth. If truth is the goal, then description is the means, and it is a means that is equally valid as the goal.
