Description

An unprecedented revolution has swept the Arab world since November 2010, but who are the true actors behind it? How did dictatorial regimes collapse in just a few months? What are the chances of these revolutions succeeding? These are the questions Tahar Yenjelloun answers in this novel, written during the crisis, on a subject he knows well and is deeply committed to exploring.

The novel “By Fire” continues this analysis: On December 17th, Mohamed Bouazizi set himself on fire… This radical act served as the spark that ignited the Jasmine Revolution in Tunisia.

In a concise, realistic, and poetic narrative, Tahar Yenjelloun recreates the days leading up to this sacrifice, in a magnificent tribute to the Arab revolutions and to the millions of unknown men and women who take to the streets demanding freedom and dignity in their countries.

Tahar Yenjelloun was born in 1944 in the Moroccan city of Fez. He is a writer, journalist, and poet, and won the French Goncourt Prize for his novel “La Nuit Destiny” (The Night of Destiny).
