Description
Her face suddenly lit up with light, and she said, her eyes sparkling, “Yes, let’s start again.” Then she turned to the window, watching the passengers jostling on the platform, the train whistle echoing through the air. He called her first name gently, and she turned to him, a tear trickling down her cheek. He whispered,
“Don’t cry.”
Her smile returned, slightly strained, and she inhaled deeply.
“Go now… everything will be alright.”
He held her in his arms for one last moment, then stepped back. All that remained of her was a quiet smile behind the glass. He said in a low voice,
“Please… take care of yourself.”
But she didn’t hear him; the noise of the wheels and the whistle of the steam swallowed her up.
