The Gay Science is considered a precursor to grand theories such as “Eternal Recurrence,” “The Will to Power,” and “The Übermensch,” among others. As is well known, the book is a satire of what Nietzsche considers outdated truths, as well as the values that underpin them. If these truths were to ever prevail, Nietzsche would “question with suspicion the delusion that defended them and granted them victory.” This is similar to the truths of scientists, which Nietzsche advises cautioning against because, due to their intellectual sterility, they despise those who are refined. “Their eyes are cold and dry, and they do not shine their light on a bird until they have stripped it of its feathers. They boast of their inability to lie, so beware of this boasting, for there is a vast difference between those who are incapable of lying and those who love the truth.”
