This symbolic theatrical work exposes the mechanisms of power and how despotism is reproduced when faces change while the structure remains the same. It offers a satirical critique of the relationship between the ruler and the ruled, and exposes the illusion of change when it does not touch the essence of governance.

Description

In this captivating play, Wanos employs ancient ideas, drawing their essence from the rich tapestry of folklore, weaving them into a folk tale reminiscent of One Thousand and One Nights. With great artistic flair, he recounts the story of a king who has toyed with his subjects and their lives. One night, the king decides to choose a man—a former merchant, betrayed by fortune, burdened by debt, and conspired against by the head of the merchants, the judge, and the very system itself. This man yearns to become the sultan of the land, to tighten his grip, even if only for a few days. The play begins when the merchant is installed as sultan over the people… “The King is the King” offers a clear political lesson: changing individuals does not change systems. Rather, systems must change from their foundations, so that bodies and faces may shine with the humanity of people in times past. For no matter how the king is changed, he remains the king, governed by his tyranny and injustice.
