Between Two Palaces is the first part of Naguib Mahfouz’s famous trilogy, which primarily and solely focuses on Cairo and the Hussein district. The novel tells the story of a middle-class family living in a working-class neighborhood in Cairo during the period before and during the 1919 Revolution. It is ruled by a strict, strong-willed father, Sayyid Ahmed Abdel Gawad (Si El Sayyid). Living under his care are his wife, Amina, his eldest son, Yassin, his sons Fahmy and Kamal, and his two daughters, Khadija and Aisha.
