The Pilgrim or The Pilgrimage of Compostela is Paulo Coelho’s first work, and tells the story of a unique spiritual quest on the Way of Saint James in Spain. The narrator sets out on a long journey in search of his sword, which he lost when he was presented to it. The teacher stipulates that in order to retrieve it, he must make a pilgrimage along an ancient road, which was used by pilgrims in the Middle Ages and was considered one of the most important religious shrines in the West. On the way, the guide Petros teaches the narrator Paulo the exercises and rituals of the “Ram” (an ancient spiritual association), simple practices that help a person discover his own path, provide him with energy and courage, and deepen his personal intuition that connects him to the truth.

The narrator is exposed to many spiritual experiences in his journey, represented in discovering new meanings of love, piety, death and pain, and most importantly, it becomes clear that reaching the stage of reconciliation with oneself and enlightenment is not elitist, nor is it limited to the chosen people, but is also available to every person who walks his own path, as the narrator walked the path of Saint Jacob, because the supernatural is present on the path of ordinary people. What is important is the path itself, and our discovery of ourselves through travel, adventure and pursuit. In the face of this discovery, the goal becomes secondary. The narrator, after walking the path in order to discover the secret of his sword, discovers that secret, but does not announce it, for the secret is what is discovered and not announced. The novel “Pilgrim of Compostela” is considered the most important station in Coelho’s life, from which he set out to other stations, and it is the beginning of the “good struggle” that will push Coelho to win the battles of high literature.
