Description

“Danishmand,” or the Scholar of Scholars, is a biography of the renowned Imam Abu Hamid al-Ghazali, who surpassed his contemporaries and became the leading scholar of his time. While the novel draws on historical narratives, it avoids the trap of stereotypical portrayals of Abu Hamid. Instead, it presents a vibrant, restless human being, depicting the atmosphere of his era: political strife, sectarian rivalries, palace intrigues, and another threat lurking in the fortress of death, no less dangerous than the Crusader Franks. This novel, in invoking a symbol from collective memory, does so to plant its questions in the soil of the present, highlighting the value of knowledge as a path to salvation. Among the questions it poses are: Can one draw closer to God without self-discipline and silence? And who will revive the religious sciences when they have become a vulnerable domain?
