Description
In his latest novel, Orhan Pamuk takes us to a small town 30 miles from Istanbul, transporting us back to the recent past of the 1980s, a time of coups and turbulent political events, through the relationship between a well-digger and his young assistant.
In “The Red-Haired Woman,” the protagonist searches for a replacement for his missing father. His relationship with the well-digger develops before an incident completely alters his life after he meets the Red-Haired Woman. When he laments his father’s absence, she confronts him, saying, “You must find yourself another father. Everyone here in this country has more than one father: the state, the holy father, the pasha, the mafia boss… Here, no one can survive without a father.” So, who is this mysterious red-haired woman?
The novel presents multiple facets of the strained relationship between fathers and sons. The political dimension is evident, but the romantic aspect is also strongly present. Through an intricate tapestry of myths, stories, and emotions, punctuated by suspense and mystery, Pamuk weaves them together into a captivating narrative that keeps the reader on the edge of their seat until the very last line.
It is a novel about family and love, youth and old age, tradition and modernity.
