Description
The author opens his beautiful novel with these words: In the ninetieth year of my life, I longed to gift myself a night of mad love with a virgin teenager. I remembered Rosa Cabarcas, the owner of a secret brothel, who used to call her good clients when a new one was ready. I never succumbed to this temptation, or to any of her other scandalous advances, but she didn’t believe in the purity of my principles. With a sly smile, she would say, “Morality is also a matter of time, and you’ll see.” She was a little younger than me, and I hadn’t heard from her for so many years that she might have died. But from the first ring, I recognized her voice on the phone and blurted out, “Today, yes.” She sighed, saying, “Ah, my sad world, you disappear for twenty years, only to return asking for the impossible.” Immediately, she regained control of her art and offered me half a dozen delicious options. But you should know, they’re all secondhand. Here, the author leaves the reader to continue the narrative and discover its purpose, allowing them to enjoy reading it.
