(A Journey to India is one of the masterpieces of world literature by the famous British author Edward Morgan Forster (1874-1970). The novel takes place in one of the states of India during the British occupation and aims to highlight the nature of the relationship between the new colonizer and the Indian people. The novel accurately depicts the conflict between two ways of life: emotional detachment and rational thinking. It also presents a viewpoint on the possibility of interfaith coexistence, clearly evident in the author’s depiction of the prevailing relations between Muslims and Hindus in the novel, demonstrating Forster’s conviction that religious diversity in a country does not necessarily mean cultural conflict.
The novel tells the story of an English girl named Quested and an Indian doctor whom she would have married had it not been for painful events. He was arrested on charges of assaulting her. However, when the case was brought to trial, Miss Quested withdrew the charges, the doctor was released, and the girl returned alone and desperate.
The novel is divided into three parts and thirty-two chapters. It is available in both Arabic and English, translated into Arabic by Samir Ezzat. Nassar.
