Description
The history of the Ismaili movement has been shrouded in much mystery and secrecy. While this may have been necessary at the time, it contributed to an aura of myth and distortion surrounding it. Its ideas and doctrines were known only to a select few of its followers, as it is an esoteric, interpretive movement. Most of its intellectual texts are considered sacred and not open to the general public. This secrecy was further reinforced by the Ismailis themselves, a consequence of Abbasid persecution, which created a chasm separating them from the wider Muslim community. The more they concealed themselves, the more isolated they became.
Now that the Ismailis have emerged from the era of dissimulation and concealment, they have begun to steadily disseminate their religious heritage, making it accessible to everyone without fear of its preservation or the fear of its influence. Here, we present to the reader some Ismaili religious texts that were once considered highly secretive due to their sacred nature. These texts have been carefully selected to encompass most aspects of Ismaili intellectual heritage and to provide the most accurate picture of it.
