Description
Zaydism is the second largest Shi’a sect today, and one of the most diverse, ranging from strict to moderate. While Shi’a characteristics are evident in the school of thought, it is distinguished by its multiple schools of jurisprudence and its continuous interpretations. It forbids blind following of any qualified scholar capable of understanding the evidence and deriving rulings from the Quran and Sunnah. They trace their lineage to Zayd ibn Ali ibn al-Husayn, who formulated his own theory of imamate and politics. He advocated rebellion against unjust rulers and rose up, spurred by promises of support from the people of Kufa. However, they quickly abandoned him, forcing him to fight an unequal battle in which he was martyred.
The Zaydis are currently represented by the Houthis, who are from Yemeni tribes. Although their leaders claim to be Zaydis within the core of the sect, a number of Zaydi scholars and scholars from other schools of thought do not consider them to be so. In this book, in addition to a comparative critical study, we find selected texts from the most important books of the Zaydi imams and jurists, which will reveal to the reader the true doctrines and systems of this school of thought.
