“East of the Mediterranean” is a novel… and Abdel Rahman Menef intended it to be a small message, a great wish for a free people on Arab soil. Because when freedom exists, both ruler and ruled can sleep soundly. However, if the ruler alone is “free,” the wheel of time never stops turning. Those who assume they possess power and freedom may find themselves the weakest and most enslaved of people, and regret will be of no use if it comes too late. Based on the experience of political prison, the novel’s events take place in a new, dark world, with mysterious paths. Through this world, Menef wanted to say much about the reality of this prison and to expose the violations suffered by all people across the Arab world. He hoped that this small message, with its great wish for a free ruler and a free citizen, would reach everyone equally.
