Description
This book… a unique work of religious literature, which feels remarkably modern despite being nine centuries old.
Sheikh al-Ghazali was captivated by this book upon first reading it, and he resolved to edit and publish it. He himself said of it: “The more I delved into its rulings and explored its various stages, the more my esteem for it and its author grew. For every opinion I reached in my numerous writings, I found that this author had already established it, supporting it with relevant texts. And for every flaw I denounced in Muslim society, this book offered a preemptive attack, containing its ill effects before they could spread.”
Al-Ghazali studied this book and sought to convey its true meaning to the best of his ability. This necessitated the removal of extraneous words, the inclusion of omitted ones, and the correction of distorted ones. He chose titles for Ibn al-Jawzi’s reflections that closely reflected their themes, and he likely achieved his aim. Sheikh al-Ghazali also clarified some of the obscure words found in the text. We ask God to forgive him for his efforts on behalf of humanity in the path of God. And God is the One who grants success, for He is the best of protectors and the best of helpers.
