Nicholson, may God have mercy on him, was unique among his country’s orientalists in his interest in that particular aspect of Islamic history – the aspect of Sufism – because he saw in it the most special and prominent aspects of spiritual life among Muslims. He devoted his long life to studying the sources of Arabic and Persian Sufism and the factors that helped in its emergence and growth.
