Description

The extraordinary thing about the writing process, whatever its form—poetry, fiction, or anything else—is that you actually lose yourself by immersing yourself completely in the work you are writing. This is a wonderful thing, except that you don’t feel it or fully realize it. I mean, a writer can become so engrossed in writing that they become unaware of their personal feelings apart from what they are writing. In this state, the writer is deeply involved in the internal music of the work they are creating, becoming one with it, detached from any other emotional state.

I believe that writing is a form of musical composition. Therefore, for me, since the paragraph is the unit of composition in a novel, and the line of poetry is the unit of composition in a poem, I work on the paragraph until I feel it has matured and possesses suitable musical rhythms, perfect balance, and skillfully crafted moments of unexpected suspense.
