Description

This novel is set in Addis Ababa, where a journalist from the Foreign Press Agency in New York is sent to Africa to write a report about intellectuals fleeing Baghdad to join the international army established by Mengistu in Ethiopia. There, the journalist encounters two eras: the era of revolution and the era of its collapse, where the revolutionaries have fallen and become patrons of nightclubs and bars. African revolutionaries—Swena, Adam, and Lalit—meet with Iraqi revolutionaries and end up with sex, homelessness, and loss as the revolution collapses. This report explores the lives of Jabr Salem, a revolutionary who came from Nasiriyah and lived in a squalid room in the Bataween district of the capital; Ahmed Saeed, who joined the revolution in the marshes and then moved to Addis Ababa after Mengistu’s rise to power; and Maysoun Abdullah, who moved from party hideouts to guerrilla warfare. This novel analyzes the lives of the African revolutionaries Adam and Lalit, the illusion of ideologies, and the falsehood of revolutions that lead to tyranny and civil wars.
