After carefully reading these stories and jotting down my suggestions for improvement, I met Mohamed Atef Ghoneim online. We discussed story structure, language and punctuation, our desire as writers to express meaning, and how to manage that desire.
I loved Mohamed’s attentive listening, his questions, and the spark of curiosity in his eyes. I thoroughly enjoyed our journey through his stories that day.
We didn’t know that this first meeting would also be our only one, and that the book’s development would end at its very beginning. Our meeting took place in the last week of September 2023. When the Al-Aqsa flood occurred on October 7th, we didn’t know that this date would become a watershed moment, marking what came before, what came after, and what will come after.
