Jan Koum is an American businessman and programmer of Ukrainian origin, born in 1976. He is famous for founding WhatsApp with Brian Acton in 2009, the application that changed the world of instant messaging. Later, WhatsApp was sold to Facebook in 2014 for a whopping $19 billion!

He was born in Ukraine during the Soviet Union, and lived a difficult childhood under harsh economic conditions.
He immigrated to the United States with his mother at the age of 16 and lived on government assistance at first.
