The story revolves around Elinor and Marianne, the daughters of Mr. Dashwood by his second wife. They have a younger sister named Margaret and an older half-brother named John. When their father dies, the family estate passes to John. The Dashwood women are left in poor condition. The story follows the lives of the Dashwood daughters in their new home in a remote cottage. They encounter romance and heartbreak. The paradox of each sister’s personality is resolved in the end, as they find lasting love and happiness. Through the events of the novel, Elinor and Marianne achieve a balance between reason (or logic) and emotion in life and love.
