Description
The second novel in Mahfouz’s historical trilogy, it is based on the ancient Egyptian legend that inspired the story of Cinderella. The young king, Merenre II, falls in love with the beautiful courtesan, Rhodopis, after finding her shoe snatched by an eagle while she was bathing. He becomes close to her, and a romantic relationship develops between them. Rhodopis helps him confront the temple priests. The king wants to seize the lands allocated for religious temples, but the priests refuse. The conflict escalates, and a massive revolt erupts, led by the priests, demanding that Nitoqrtis, the king’s wife, rule the country. Rhodopis remains loyal to the king until his fate.
