Description
An early example of mystery fiction, the protagonist, Walter Hartright, uses many of the spy techniques that would later become the standard for detective fiction. Collins’s narrative is told through multiple narrators, drawing on his legal training, and, as he himself notes in the preamble: “The story here presented will be told by more than one pen, as a crime against the law is told in court by more than one witness.”
