The novel takes place in the twenty years preceding the conquest of Egypt, and in some of its scenes the conqueror Amr ibn al-Aas, his wife Rayta (Raita), and the companion Hatib ibn Abi Balta’a appear, in addition to fictional characters through which the novel reveals the nature of life, humanity, and the religious trends that were prevalent in the region extending from the Nile Delta to the north of the Arabian Peninsula, at the time when Islam appeared and spread east and west.
