He received his Sufi training from his sheikh, Abu al-Hasan al-Shadhili, whom he met in Tunis after studying jurisprudence, exegesis, hadith, logic, and philosophy. He became a companion of the imam and subsequently became the imam of the Shadhili order. They both came to Alexandria and settled there. Large crowds of people, both from the elite and the general public, frequented their lessons and gatherings. Abu al-Abbas al-Mursi passed away and was buried in the site now occupied by his grand mosque in Alexandria, which has become a mosque and a shrine. It has been restored several times and is now the largest mosque in Alexandria.
