Many problems confront Arab intellectuals, ranging from the ongoing debate surrounding the social and political role of the intellectual to the attempt to overcome the setbacks resulting from the decline of nationalist movements, the collapse of the Soviet Union, and the United States’ self-appointment as the world’s leader and protector of the established order. This implies the dominance of a model aimed at subjugation and control.<\/p>\n
Various topics are central to the dialogue surrounding current tasks and exploring the horizons of what must be addressed, such as religion, oil, women, and the role of literature in general and the novel in particular. These topics form the core of this book, which compiles the opinions of Abdul Rahman Munif in the hope of broadening the scope of discussion and providing a document that reflects the concerns of this era.<\/p>\n
This book, titled “Between Culture and Politics,” primarily aims to raise a number of issues, which are more akin to questions than to offering complete answers or solutions.<\/p>\n
The relationship between culture and politics is indeed a major problem at this stage, because the numerous disappointments of recent times have created a climate of confusion. This climate has fostered illusions, necessitating a broad dialogue to arrive at a new framework defining the relationship between culture and politics, and between intellectuals and politicians.<\/p>\n
What is said about culture and politics also applies to the relationship between media and culture, the role of the intellectual in the current era, the perspective on the Renaissance, its rise and fall, and the dramatic collapse of the Soviet Union and the socialist bloc without a political crisis or military defeat, as well as the impact of oil on the entire Arab region. These topics, and others, I believe should be presented as problems requiring re-examination and reflection. Only through this approach can we read events and phenomena calmly and objectively, paving the way for a better understanding and engagement with them.<\/p>\n
The most complex and intricate issues find their solutions only through questioning. Any answer, however well-intentioned, even if offered individually, can only contain a fraction of the truth. The whole truth cannot emerge, nor can it be attained, except through the exchange of viewpoints, examining the solidity and coherence of facts and their interrelationships, and considering multiple perspectives.<\/p>\n
