The vast amount of material I have gathered on the civilization of Mesopotamia necessitated dividing it into two parts. The first part, which I present to the readers now, is dedicated to the history of ancient Iraq from the earliest prehistoric times to the end of the Sasanian era, that is, the beginning of the Arab-Islamic conquest. It summarizes the periods of this long history, the political and cultural events, the dynasties and states that ruled it, and the accompanying economic, social, and artistic changes. It also briefly outlines the civilizational and cultural characteristics of each historical period.<\/p>\n
The second section is dedicated to the various aspects and components of civilization, including religion, beliefs, laws, literature, knowledge, sciences, systems, and social, political, and economic institutions. Secondly, this division necessitated a change in the presentation of the material compared to my previous book. In that earlier work, I divided the first part, which dealt with the civilization of Mesopotamia, into two sections. The first section summarized the historical periods from a political perspective, while the second section addressed the various aspects of civilization. Although this division remains in place in my new book, the increased volume and content, coupled with the requirements of the new historical methodology I adopted, led me to summarize the general characteristics and features of civilization at the end of each historical period in the first part of my new book, which focuses on political periods.
