Al-Manfaluti’s Selected Works is a collection of approximately twenty articles in which the author expresses his views on Egyptian society in particular and Western society in general. He includes his complaints about the political and social conditions in which he finds himself floundering. Most of his opinions are derived from ethical principles that combine concepts from Islam with the concepts of justice and equality established by the French Revolution, which began to bear fruit on a social level in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.<\/p>\n
In the first of his selections, Al-Manfaluti presents his firm stance against alcohol and gambling, asserting that they are at the root of all crimes that threaten the security of society and the well-being of its members. In one of his essays, Al-Manfaluti imagines that the philosopher of Ma’arra, Abu al-‘Ala’ al-Ma’arri, returns to life for just three days after reaching the age of eighty and becomes the writer’s guest. Al-Manfaluti seizes the opportunity to express his views, which he shares with al-Ma’arri, on food, clothing, drink, and the relationship between human beings and the creatures of nature. Al-Manfaluti concludes his essays by emphasizing that the relentless pursuit of money is the root of all problems and the cause of all decline. As long as men in Egyptian society make money their ultimate goal, morality cannot reach its rightful place.
