Imru’ al-Qais is one of the most prominent poets of the pre-Islamic era. He is considered among the leading figures of the first rank. In his poetry, one notices the delicacy of the words, the quality of the composition, and the eloquence of the meanings. He preceded other poets in things he invented and which the Arabs admired and which other poets followed him in, such as his pausing and stopping his companions in the dwellings, the delicacy of the love poem, the accessibility of the approach, the quality of the simile and his artistry in it, the precision of the description, and his skill in it, and what is in his description of life and movement, and in his poetry is the symbolism and allusion and the correspondence of words to meanings. It has been said of Imru’ al-Qays that he did not precede other poets because he said things they hadn’t said, but rather because he pioneered certain aspects that other poets admired and followed. He was the first to refine meaning, to pause at the ruins, and to make language more accessible, thus capturing the essence of the past and mastering metaphor and elegiac language. He frequently mentioned the ruins, turned to loved ones, and employed a variety of descriptive techniques. Imru’ al-Qays established a poetic tradition of pausing at the ruins and weeping over them, a tradition followed by poets after him. This book, part of the “Diwan al-Arab” series, compiles Imru’ al-Qays’s poems arranged alphabetically by rhyme.
