\u201cThe Flower of Life\u201d refers to the period Tawfiq al-Hakim spent in Paris during his youth. During his stay there, he wrote a series of letters to his friend Andr\u00e9. Several years later, al-Hakim visited Andr\u00e9, and those letters fell into his hands. He took them in with tenderness and care, as if carrying the ashes left over from the withered flower of his youth. He cherished these letters and translated them into Arabic to bear witness to that fertile period of his life, and to express, with complete spontaneity, the young man he once was. They reveal his soul wandering in the human realm, his early awareness of art and his fascination with theater, his discussions of literature, poetry, culture, and thought, as well as his accounts of many personal situations and his reactions to them.
