The novel Letters from Underground by Dostoevsky. As you read this novel, you wonder what made you share this cockroach-like man with his dark and foul atmosphere. It is divided into two parts: Underground, in which the vile protagonist speaks about himself, and we get to know this character who doesn’t like anyone, perhaps even hates everyone, and whose mission is to disrupt the peace of everyone around him. As for the second part: Dedicated to the Dewy Snow, in which this protagonist talks about some of the adventures he lived through and recounts the details of the events that occurred in his life. The novel clearly leans towards expressing existential philosophy, and some consider it the first existential novel. The human being, with all his flaws, is the foundation and essence of the narrative. While reading this novel, we almost feel as though we are sitting behind the protagonist’s eyes, observing the events. However, there’s an added layer: what moves us in that space are the protagonist’s thoughts and perceptions of the people around him, which he has created, and which may not reflect reality. The man is extremely pessimistic. The darkness and gloomy fog in the scenes reminded me of Kafka’s frightening books, as if you are in a real, miserable, and dark cellar, trying to finish quickly and escape the book\u2014not for the suspense it contains, because it doesn’t, but for the suffocating feeling of the author’s pessimism about this world. Before reading, take a compass and read about Dostoevsky’s thought before opening one of his books… and then read slowly. “I am a sick man… I am a wicked man… I am rather a repulsive man.” Yes, Dostoevsky is a great writer, distinguished by his exploration of the depths of the human psyche, with a tendency to highlight the negative and miserable aspects. But this novel is unnaturally bleak. The events are few, and the internal monologue is excessively long.
