Miraculously escaping the death penalty, he was exiled to a Siberian prison, where he endured four years of hard labor. This personal experience gave rise to this novel, which recounts—in the form of a memoir—life in the prison camp, its prevailing system, the cruelty of the executioners, hunger, and grueling labor. It vividly portrays the horror and injustice, and many different events are narrated in detail with profound human emotion.

In addition to its historical significance and personal nature, this work represents a turning point in Dostoevsky’s literary career. The writer drew inspiration from the prisoners he encountered during this time for many of the characters in his later masterpieces. Regarding his years in the concentration camps, Dostoevsky wrote in one of his letters: “My time was not wasted, for I came to know the Russian people intimately, a knowledge that few others possess.”

It is, above all, an ode to life.
